  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to crime; providing felony penalties for 
  1.3             nonresident aliens who illegally possess a firearm; 
  1.4             amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 624.719. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 624.719, is 
  1.7   amended to read: 
  1.8      624.719 [POSSESSION OF FIREARM BY NONRESIDENT ALIEN.] 
  1.9      A nonresident alien may not possess a firearm except to 
  1.10  take game as a nonresident under the game and fish laws.  A 
  1.11  person who violates this section is guilty of a felony.  In 
  1.12  addition, a firearm possessed in violation of this section is 
  1.13  contraband and may be confiscated forfeited as provided in 
  1.14  section 609.5316.  
  1.15     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.16     Section 1 is effective August 1, 1998, and applies to 
  1.17  offenses committed on or after that date.
