  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to criminal procedure; providing that an 
  1.3             interpreter may be present when the grand jury is 
  1.4             deliberating; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, 
  1.5             section 628.63. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 628.63, is 
  1.8   amended to read: 
  1.9      628.63 [GRAND JURY; WHO MAY BE PRESENT; COUNTY ATTORNEY TO 
  1.10  ATTEND; DUTIES.] 
  1.11     The grand jury may at all reasonable times ask the advice 
  1.12  of the court, or of the county attorney, and the county attorney 
  1.13  shall attend it for the purpose of framing indictments or 
  1.14  examining witnesses in its presence. 
  1.15     The persons specified in rule 18.04 of the rules of 
  1.16  criminal procedure may, subject to the conditions specified in 
  1.17  that rule, be present before the grand jury when it is in 
  1.18  session, but no person other than the jurors may be present 
  1.19  while the grand jury is deliberating or voting, except that a 
  1.20  qualified interpreter may assist a grand juror who is 
  1.21  handicapped in communication.
