  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to the legislature; fixing the amount of the 
  1.3             daily allowance for meals for members; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 3.099, subdivision 1. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 3.099, 
  1.7   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [PAY DAYS; MILEAGE; PER DIEM.] The 
  1.9   compensation of each member of the legislature is due on the 
  1.10  first day of the regular legislative session of the term and 
  1.11  payable in equal parts on January 15, in the first month of each 
  1.12  term and on the first day of each following month during the 
  1.13  term for which the member was elected.  The compensation of each 
  1.14  member of the legislature elected at a special election is due 
  1.15  on the day the member takes the oath of office and payable 
  1.16  within ten days of taking the oath for the remaining part of the 
  1.17  month in which the oath was taken, and then in equal parts on 
  1.18  the first day of each following month during the term for which 
  1.19  the member was elected. 
  1.20     Each member shall receive mileage for necessary travel to 
  1.21  the place of meeting and returning to the member's residence in 
  1.22  the amount and for trips as authorized by the senate for senate 
  1.23  members and by the house of representatives for house members. 
  1.24     Each member shall also receive per diem living expenses 
  1.25  during a regular or special session of the legislature in the 
  2.1   amounts and for the purposes as determined by the senate for 
  2.2   senate members and by the house of representatives for house 
  2.3   members.  Per diem expenses for meals may be allowed in an 
  2.4   amount not greater than $7 for breakfast, $7 for lunch, and $14 
  2.5   for dinner, payable upon presentation of a receipt. 
  2.6      On January 15 in the first month of each term and on the 
  2.7   first day of each following month, the secretary of the senate 
  2.8   and the chief clerk of the house of representatives shall 
  2.9   certify to the commissioner of finance, in duplicate, the amount 
  2.10  of compensation then payable to each member of their respective 
  2.11  houses and its total.
