  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to corrections; appropriating money for the 
  1.3             reduction of probation officer caseload, supervised 
  1.4             release and probation services, and county probation 
  1.5             officer reimbursement. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION; REDUCTION OF PROBATION OFFICER 
  1.8   CASELOADS.] 
  1.9      In fiscal year 1997, $....... is appropriated from the 
  1.10  general fund to the commissioner of corrections to distribute 
  1.11  money for state and county probation officer caseload reduction, 
  1.12  increased supervised release and probation services, and county 
  1.13  probation officer reimbursement according to the formula 
  1.14  contained in Minnesota Statutes, section 401.10.  This 
  1.15  appropriation may not be used to supplant existing state or 
  1.16  county probation officer positions or existing correctional 
  1.17  services or programs.  The money appropriated under this section 
  1.18  is intended to reduce state and county probation officer 
  1.19  workload overcrowding and to increase supervision of individuals 
  1.20  sentenced to probation at the county level.  This increased 
  1.21  supervision may be accomplished through a variety of methods, 
  1.22  including but not limited to: 
  1.23     (1) innovative technology services, such as automated 
  1.24  probation reporting systems and electronic monitoring; 
  1.25     (2) prevention and diversion programs; 
  2.1      (3) intergovernmental cooperation agreements between local 
  2.2   governments and appropriate community resources; and 
  2.3      (4) traditional probation program services.
