A bill for an act
relating to public safety; State Fire Code; prohibiting sprinkler requirements in
single-family dwellings; amending Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 299F.011,
by adding a subdivision.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
Minnesota Statutes 2012, section 299F.011, is amended by adding a
subdivision to read:

(a) Any requirement in the
State Building Code, the State Fire Code, or a political subdivision of the state by code,
by ordinance, as a condition of receiving public funding, or in any other way requiring
the installation of fire sprinklers, any fire sprinkler system components, automatic
fire-extinguishing equipment or devices, or mechanical fire suppression in any new or
existing single-family detached dwelling unit does not apply to those new or existing
single-family detached dwelling units that are: (1) less than 7,000 square feet in size; or
(2) located outside the seven-county metropolitan area.

(b) This subdivision does not affect or limit a requirement for smoke or fire
detectors, alarms, or their components.
