  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; allowing the consolidated Red 
  1.3             Rock school district to accelerate the schedule for 
  1.4             reducing the number of school board members. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [ACCELERATED TRANSITION PLAN.] 
  1.7      Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, section 122.23, 
  1.8   subdivision 2b, or other law to the contrary, independent school 
  1.9   district No. 2884, Red Rock Central, is authorized to terminate 
  1.10  all existing school board members' terms by December 31, 1998, 
  1.11  and to hold elections for seven school board members at the 1998 
  1.12  school district general election under Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.13  section 205A.04.  Of the seven board members elected, three 
  1.14  members shall be elected to serve four-year terms and four 
  1.15  members shall be elected to serve two-year terms.  Only one 
  1.16  board member from each election district shall be elected to 
  1.17  serve a four-year term.  Candidates must specify in their 
  1.18  affidavit the election district and the term of office to which 
  1.19  they are seeking election.  The school board members elected at 
  1.20  the 1998 school district general election shall assume office on 
  1.21  January 1, 1999.
