  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to peace officers; including officers of the 
  1.3             Department of Veterans Affairs in the definition of 
  1.4             "federal law enforcement officers" for purposes of 
  1.5             state arrest authority and tort liability and 
  1.6             indemnification; amending Minnesota Statutes 2002, 
  1.7             section 626.77, subdivision 3. 
  1.8   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.9      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 626.77, 
  1.10  subdivision 3, is amended to read: 
  1.11     Subd. 3.  [DEFINITION.] As used in this section, "federal 
  1.12  law enforcement officer" means an officer or employee whether 
  1.13  employed inside or outside the state of the Federal Bureau of 
  1.14  Investigation, the Drug Enforcement Administration, the United 
  1.15  States Marshal Service, the Secret Service, the Bureau of 
  1.16  Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, the Department of Veterans 
  1.17  Affairs, or the Immigration and Naturalization Service, who is 
  1.18  responsible for the prevention or detection of crimes or for the 
  1.19  enforcement of the United States Code and who is authorized to 
  1.20  arrest, with or without a warrant, any individual for a 
  1.21  violation of the United States Code. 
  1.22     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective July 1, 2004.
