  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to public safety; permitting certain 
  1.3             emergency responders to operate vehicles with flashing 
  1.4             lights and sirens; amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, 
  1.5             section 169.58, subdivision 2.  
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 169.58, 
  1.8   subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 2.  [RED LAMP; SIREN; PERMIT FOR VOLUNTEER EMERGENCY 
  1.10  RESPONDERS.] Upon obtaining a permit from the commissioner of 
  1.11  public safety, any motor vehicles operated by an active member 
  1.12  of a volunteer fire department authorized by or contracting with 
  1.13  any city, town, or township in this state, an emergency medical 
  1.14  first responder, or an ambulance crew member may be equipped 
  1.15  with a lamp emitting a red light to the front of such the 
  1.16  vehicle.  The lamp may emit either a steady or a flashing red 
  1.17  light.  The lens of such the lamp shall be not more than three 
  1.18  inches in diameter.  Such The motor vehicle may also be equipped 
  1.19  with a siren.  The siren may not exceed 100 watts.  The lamp 
  1.20  shall and siren may be lighted activated only when the member of 
  1.21  the volunteer fire department, ambulance crew member, or 
  1.22  emergency medical first responder is responding to an emergency 
  1.23  call in connection with duties as a volunteer firefighter, 
  1.24  ambulance crew member, or responder.  The commissioner of public 
  1.25  safety is hereby authorized to issue permits on applications of 
  2.1   a member of a volunteer fire department properly certified to by 
  2.2   the chief of said the volunteer fire department, and on 
  2.3   applications for emergency medical first responders or ambulance 
  2.4   crew members. The commissioner of public safety must be notified 
  2.5   immediately upon the termination of membership in a volunteer 
  2.6   fire department or when an ambulance or permitted emergency 
  2.7   medical first responder ceases operations. 
  2.8      [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective August 1, 2002.
