A bill for an act
relating to education; requiring commissioner of education to develop child abuse
awareness posters; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter
120B.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

[120B.219] CHILD ABUSE AWARENESS POSTERS.

(a) The commissioner shall, in consultation with local, state, and federal agencies and
nonprofit organizations, create a poster that notifies children of the appropriate number to
call to report child abuse or neglect. The poster shall:

(1) include a note that directs a child to dial 911 in case of emergency;

(2) include a phone number for the county's child protection services;

(3) be no smaller than 8-1/2 inches by 11 inches; and

(4) be produced in at least five languages other than English that are spoken in the state
as determined by the commissioner.

(b) The commissioner shall make all versions of the poster available to the public on
the department's Web site.

(c) A school district, charter school, and nonpublic school must post the
commissioner-created poster or a district-created poster that meets the requirements in
paragraph (a) in an area of the school where students frequently congregate. The district or
school must post versions of the poster in languages spoken by a significant portion of the
student body.
