  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to towns; allowing towns to spend up to $800 
  1.3             for school district academic and extra curricula 
  1.4             activities; amending Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 
  1.5             471.15. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 471.15, is 
  1.8   amended to read: 
  1.9      471.15 [RECREATIONAL FACILITIES BY MUNICIPALITY, VETERANS; 
  1.10  BONDS.] 
  1.11     (a) Any home rule charter or statutory city or any town, 
  1.12  county, school district, or any board thereof, or any 
  1.13  incorporated post of the American Legion or any other 
  1.14  incorporated veterans' organization, may expend not to exceed 
  1.15  $800 in any one year, for the purchase of awards and trophies 
  1.16  and may operate a program of public recreation and playgrounds; 
  1.17  acquire, equip, and maintain land, buildings, or other 
  1.18  recreational facilities, including an outdoor or indoor swimming 
  1.19  pool; and expend funds for the operation of such program 
  1.20  pursuant to the provisions of sections 471.15 to 471.19.  The 
  1.21  city, town, county or school district may issue bonds pursuant 
  1.22  to chapter 475 for the purpose of carrying out the powers 
  1.23  granted by this section.  The city, town, county or school 
  1.24  district may operate the program and facilities directly or 
  1.25  establish one or more recreation boards to operate all or 
  2.1   various parts of them. 
  2.2      (b) A town may expend in any one year some or all of the 
  2.3   $800 permitted under paragraph (a) for the purpose of supporting 
  2.4   student academic and extra curricula activities sponsored by the 
  2.5   local school district.
