  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to tribal-state relations; directing the 
  1.3             governor to take steps to initiate discussions with 
  1.4             Indian tribal governments on items of mutual interest 
  1.5             to the parties; requiring a report to the legislature. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [DISCUSSIONS WITH TRIBAL GOVERNMENTS.] 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [DISCUSSIONS.] The governor shall, at the 
  1.9   earliest feasible date, take all steps necessary to contact the 
  1.10  governing body of each Indian tribe in the state and request the 
  1.11  governing body to participate in discussions between the state 
  1.12  and the tribe. 
  1.13     Subd. 2.  [ITEMS OF DISCUSSION.] The governor shall include 
  1.14  in the discussions items of interest mutually agreed upon 
  1.15  between the governor and the tribal government. 
  1.16     Subd. 3.  [REPORT.] The governor shall report to the 
  1.17  legislature by January 1, 1997, on the results of the 
  1.18  discussions undertaken under subdivision 1. 
  1.19     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.20     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
