  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to crime; expanding the enhancement penalties 
  1.3             for crimes committed for the benefit of a gang to 
  1.4             include crimes that are motivated by involvement with 
  1.5             a gang; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 
  1.6             609.229, subdivision 2. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 609.229, 
  1.9   subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 2.  [CRIMES.] A person who commits a crime for the 
  1.11  benefit of, at the direction of, or in association with, or 
  1.12  motivated by involvement with a criminal gang, with the intent 
  1.13  to promote, further, or assist in criminal conduct by gang 
  1.14  members is guilty of a crime and may be sentenced as provided in 
  1.15  subdivision 3. 
  1.16     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.17     Section 1 is effective August 1, 1998, and applies to 
  1.18  crimes committed on or after that date.
