  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to courts; providing a per diem; requiring 
  1.3             compensation at an hourly rate equal to the minimum 
  1.4             wage for jurors; amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, 
  1.5             section 593.48. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 593.48, is 
  1.8   amended to read: 
  1.9      593.48 [COMPENSATION OF JURORS AND TRAVEL REIMBURSEMENT.] 
  1.10     (a) A juror shall be reimbursed for round-trip travel 
  1.11  between the juror's residence and the place of holding court and 
  1.12  compensated for required attendance at sessions of court as 
  1.13  provided in paragraph (b) and may be reimbursed for additional 
  1.14  day care expenses incurred as a result of jury duty at rates 
  1.15  determined by the supreme court.  
  1.16     (b) A juror shall receive $50 a day per diem and must be 
  1.17  compensated at an hourly rate equal to the federal minimum wage 
  1.18  set by federal law under United States Code, title 29, section 
  1.19  206. 
  1.20     (c) A juror may request reimbursement for additional 
  1.21  parking expenses incurred as a result of jury duty, in which 
  1.22  case the reimbursement shall be paid and the juror's 
  1.23  compensation for required attendance at sessions of court shall 
  1.24  be reduced by the amount of the parking reimbursement.  
  1.25     (d) Except in the eighth judicial district where the state 
  2.1   shall pay directly, the compensation and reimbursement shall be 
  2.2   paid out of the county treasury upon receipt of authorization to 
  2.3   pay from the jury commissioner.  These jury costs shall be 
  2.4   reimbursed monthly by the supreme court upon submission of an 
  2.5   invoice by the county treasurer.  A monthly report of payments 
  2.6   to jurors shall be sent to the jury commissioner within two 
  2.7   weeks of the end of the month in the form required by the jury 
  2.8   commissioner.
