  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime; clarifying that the definition of 
  1.3             "peace officer" in the fleeing a peace officer crime 
  1.4             includes tribal peace officers; amending Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes 1998, section 609.487, subdivision 2. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1998, section 609.487, 
  1.8   subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 2.  [PEACE OFFICER; DEFINITION.] For purposes of this 
  1.10  section, "peace officer" means: 
  1.11     (1) an employee of a political subdivision or state law 
  1.12  enforcement agency who is licensed by the Minnesota board of 
  1.13  peace officer standards and training, charged with the 
  1.14  prevention and detection of crime and the enforcement of the 
  1.15  general criminal laws of the state and who has the full power of 
  1.16  arrest, and shall also include the Minnesota state patrol and 
  1.17  Minnesota conservation officers; or 
  1.18     (2) an employee of a law enforcement agency of a federally 
  1.19  recognized tribe, as defined in United States Code, title 25, 
  1.20  section 450b(e), who is licensed by the Minnesota board of peace 
  1.21  officer standards and training; or 
  1.22     (3) a member of a duly organized state, county, or 
  1.23  municipal law enforcement unit of another state charged with the 
  1.24  duty to prevent and detect crime and generally enforce criminal 
  1.25  laws, and granted full powers of arrest. 
  2.1      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.2      Section 1 is effective August 1, 2000, and applies to acts 
  2.3   committed on or after that date.
