  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; allowing small school districts 
  1.3             and school districts located on the border of the 
  1.4             state to determine an appropriate school guidance 
  1.5             counselor to student ratio; proposing coding for new 
  1.6             law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 122A.  
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [122A.34] [SCHOOL GUIDANCE COUNSELOR TO STUDENT 
  1.9   RATIOS; SMALL AND BORDER DISTRICTS.] 
  1.10     Notwithstanding other law or rule to the contrary, a school 
  1.11  district with fewer than 400 resident pupils enrolled in grades 
  1.12  seven through 12 or a school district that is located on the 
  1.13  border of the state may determine the school guidance counselor 
  1.14  to student ratio in the district based on the needs of the 
  1.15  students and the school and on the goals and design of the 
  1.16  counseling program. 
  1.17     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective for the 
  1.18  2001-2002 school year and later.
