  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to the legislature; providing for social 
  1.3             security coverage; proposing coding for new law in 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes, chapter 3A. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [3A.15] [SOCIAL SECURITY COVERAGE.] 
  1.7      The service of persons first elected to the legislature in 
  1.8   1998 or thereafter is employment subject to sections 355.01 to 
  1.9   355.08.  Under the authority of those sections, the governor 
  1.10  shall enter into an agreement with the Secretary of Health and 
  1.11  Human Services consistent with United States Code, title 42, 
  1.12  section 418, to extend the benefits of the federal Old-age, 
  1.13  Survivors, and Disability Insurance system to those persons.  To 
  1.14  the extent permitted by federal law, the governor shall enter 
  1.15  into an agreement with the Secretary of Health and Human 
  1.16  Services to permit persons first elected to the legislature 
  1.17  before 1998 to elect participation in the federal Old-age, 
  1.18  Survivors, and Disability Insurance system.
