1.1A resolution
1.2supporting smoking cessation efforts among Native people.
1.3WHEREAS, ClearWay Minnesota and its partner organizations, and the Minnesota
1.4Department of Health, fund research, intervention, and community development projects, such as
1.5wellness programs for adults and youth tobacco prevention activities; and
1.6WHEREAS, funding of cessation, research, and policy efforts in Minnesota Native
1.7American communities by ClearWay Minnesota and its partner organizations has not been
1.8commensurate with the persisting health disparities between Native people and the general
1.9population that are well-documented by Indian Health Service; NOW, THEREFORE,
1.10BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota that it:
1.11(1) supports efforts to prevent smoking addiction among Native people, especially our
1.12youth;
1.13(2) supports smoking cessation efforts, including the development of culturally-specific
1.14cessation models; and
1.15(3) supports tribal members by increasing smoke-free policies and enforcement of current
1.16policies to protect the health of tribal people.
1.17BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Legislature of the State of Minnesota calls on
1.18ClearWay Minnesota and its partner organizations, and the Minnesota Department of Health, to
1.19immediately provide adequate funding to tribal programs and urban organizations for smoking
1.20cessation, prevention, and research efforts to reduce health disparities for Minnesota Native
1.21people.
2.1BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Secretary of State of the State of Minnesota is
2.2directed to prepare a copy of this memorial and transmit it to the Minnesota Department of Health.
