  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; requiring certain school 
  1.3             districts to receive community approval before naming 
  1.4             or renaming a school facility; amending Minnesota 
  1.5             Statutes 2000, section 123B.51, by adding a 
  1.6             subdivision. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 123B.51, is 
  1.9   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 5a.  [SCHOOL FACILITY NAMES.] Prior to naming or 
  1.11  renaming a school facility, the board of education of any school 
  1.12  district located in a city of the first class with more than 
  1.13  300,000 residents must submit the proposed name to the governing 
  1.14  board of the neighborhood association.  The board of education 
  1.15  may not formally name or rename a school facility until after 
  1.16  the board has received a resolution from the local neighborhood 
  1.17  association consenting to the school name. 
  1.18     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective the day 
  1.19  following final enactment.
