  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to game and fish; permitting the taking of 
  1.3             deer with certain handguns; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 1994, section 97B.031, by adding a 
  1.5             subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 97B.031, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 5.  [HANDGUN USE FOR TAKING DEER.] Notwithstanding 
  1.10  subdivision 1, a person may take deer with a handgun within the 
  1.11  shotgun use area if: 
  1.12     (1) the handgun and projectile meet the requirements of 
  1.13  subdivision 1; 
  1.14     (2) the projectile used is capable of producing at least 
  1.15  350 foot pounds of energy at 50 yards and the handgun has a 
  1.16  barrel length of at least six inches; or 
  1.17     (3) the projectile used is a .357 magnum, .40 Smith and 
  1.18  Wesson, .41 Remington magnum, .44 Remington magnum, or .45 Colt, 
  1.19  and the handgun has a barrel length of at least six inches. 
  1.20     For purposes of this subdivision the shotgun use area is 
  1.21  that area prescribed by the commissioner pursuant to section 
  1.22  97B.311, in which only legal shotguns loaded with single-slug 
  1.23  shotgun shells and legal muzzleloading long guns may be used for 
  1.24  taking deer.
