1.1 A bill for an act 1.2 relating to crime; increasing penalties for assaulting 1.3 a firefighter or a provider of emergency medical 1.4 services; amending Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 1.5 609.2231, subdivision 2, and by adding a subdivision. 1.6 BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 1.7 Section 1. Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 609.2231, 1.8 subdivision 2, is amended to read: 1.9 Subd. 2. [FIREFIGHTERS AND EMERGENCY MEDICAL PERSONNEL.] 1.10 Whoever assaults any of the following persons and inflicts 1.11 demonstrable bodily harm is guilty of agross misdemeanorfelony 1.12 and may be sentenced to imprisonment for not more than two years 1.13 or to payment of a fine of not more than $4,000, or both: 1.14 (1) a member of a municipal or volunteer fire department or 1.15 emergency medical services personnel unit in the performance of 1.16 the member's duties; or 1.17 (2) a physician, nurse, or other person providing health 1.18 care services in a hospital emergency department; or1.19(3) an employee of the department of natural resources who1.20is engaged in forest fire activities. 1.21 Sec. 2. Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 609.2231, is 1.22 amended by adding a subdivision to read: 1.23 Subd. 2a. [CERTAIN DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES 1.24 EMPLOYEES.] Whoever assaults and inflicts demonstrable bodily 1.25 harm on an employee of the department of natural resources who 2.1 is engaged in forest fire activities is guilty of a gross 2.2 misdemeanor. 2.3 Sec. 3. [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 2.4 Sections 1 and 2 are effective August 1, 1996, and apply to 2.5 crimes committed on or after that date.
