  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; permitting certain school 
  1.3             district school years to begin before Labor Day.  
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [BUFFALO; SCHOOL YEAR.] 
  1.6      Subdivision 1.  [EXCEPTION.] Notwithstanding Minnesota 
  1.7   Statutes, section 126.12, subdivision 1, independent school 
  1.8   districts No. 877, Buffalo, 656, Faribault, and students from 
  1.9   the residential academies, independent school district No. 0160 
  1.10  may begin the 1996-1997 school year prior to Labor Day only by 
  1.11  the number of days necessary to accommodate the transition into 
  1.12  the new or renovated senior high school building. 
  1.13     Subd. 2.  [CONDITIONAL EXCEPTION.] If this act is effective 
  1.14  after April 1, 1996, the boards of independent school district 
  1.15  Nos. 877, Buffalo, and 656, Faribault, are exempt from the April 
  1.16  1 deadline for setting a school calendar for the 1996-1997 
  1.17  school year in Minnesota Statutes, section 126.12, subdivision 
  1.18  2.  The board must set the calendar as soon as possible after 
  1.19  the effective date of this section. 
  1.20     Subd. 3.  [APPLICATION.] This section applies only for the 
  1.21  1996-1997 school year.  
  1.22     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.23     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
