A bill for an act
relating to education; awarding General Educational Development (GED)
diplomas to World War II veterans; appropriating money.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

(a) The men and women who served honorably and bravely in the military during
World War II sacrificed their lives during the course of this patriotic service. They often
served at great risk to personal safety and in the face of the enemy. They placed the
national interests above their own interests in family, work, and education.

(b) Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, sections 124D.549 and 124D.55, and
Minnesota Rules, part 3500.3100, the commissioner of education shall issue a General
Educational Development (GED) diploma to a person who:

(1) is a Minnesota resident;
new text end
new text begin
(2) served in a branch of the United States armed forces during World War II;
new text end
new text begin
(3) was honorably discharged from the United States armed forces; and
new text end
new text begin
(4) has not earned a high school diploma or previously been issued a GED diploma.

An eligible person may apply to the commissioner for a GED diploma in a form and
manner developed by the commissioner.

The amount indicated in this section is
appropriated from the general fund to the Department of Education for the fiscal years
designated.
