  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to state government; designating June 19 as 
  1.3             Juneteenth in recognition of the abolition of slavery; 
  1.4             proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, 
  1.5             chapter 10. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [10.55] [JUNETEENTH.] 
  1.8      June 19 is designated Juneteenth in recognition of the 
  1.9   historical pronouncement of the abolition of slavery on June 19, 
  1.10  1865, when the Emancipation Proclamation was said to have been 
  1.11  first publicly read in Texas.  The governor may take any action 
  1.12  necessary to promote and encourage the observance of Juneteenth 
  1.13  and public schools may offer instruction and programs on the 
  1.14  occasion.
