  1.1                             A resolution
  1.2             relating to the 25th anniversary of Earth Day. 
  1.3      
  1.4      WHEREAS, Rachel Carson's Silent Spring raised the 
  1.5   consciousness of post-war America to the importance of 
  1.6   environmental protection; and 
  1.7      WHEREAS, 25 years ago Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson was 
  1.8   instrumental in organizing the first nationwide Earth Day 
  1.9   celebration on April 22, 1970; and 
  1.10     WHEREAS, the State of Minnesota has led the nation in 
  1.11  adopting good, sound environmental protection and resource 
  1.12  preservation laws for the benefit of its citizens, including the 
  1.13  Environmental Policy Act, the Reinvest in Minnesota Conservation 
  1.14  Reserve Program, the Groundwater Protection Act, the Solid Waste 
  1.15  Reduction and Recycling Act, the Environment and Natural 
  1.16  Resources Trust Fund, and the Wetlands Conservation Act; and 
  1.17     WHEREAS, the 25th anniversary of Earth Day marks a 
  1.18  generation of the combined efforts of environmental activists, 
  1.19  conservationists, government officials, scientists, engineers, 
  1.20  and business leaders to bring us to this landmark celebration; 
  1.21  and 
  1.22     WHEREAS, while these efforts and their positive results 
  1.23  must be acknowledged and upheld, the right of future generations 
  1.24  to a safe and healthy environment cannot be ignored; NOW, 
  2.1   THEREFORE, 
  2.2      BE IT RESOLVED by the Legislature of the State of Minnesota 
  2.3   that it pledges to conserve the hard-won and necessary 
  2.4   environmental protection, preservation, and enhancement measures 
  2.5   of the last quarter century. 
  2.6      BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that continued environmental 
  2.7   stewardship by each and every one of us will justify the 
  2.8   celebrating of Earth Day for many generations to come.
