  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to children; requiring the commissioner of 
  1.3             children, families, and learning to encourage 
  1.4             businesses and other organizations to donate materials 
  1.5             for families to help their children develop skills to 
  1.6             succeed in reading and school. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [CHILDHOOD MATERIALS; CONTRIBUTIONS.] 
  1.9      The commissioner of children, families, and learning shall 
  1.10  initiate contacts with businesses and other organizations to 
  1.11  encourage them to donate materials designed to help families 
  1.12  interact with their children during the first four years of life 
  1.13  in ways that will help develop the skills and abilities 
  1.14  necessary to succeed in reading and in school.  The goal of this 
  1.15  cooperative effort shall be to provide learning materials for 
  1.16  children under age five through an alliance of business, 
  1.17  nonprofit organizations, and government.  The commissioner shall 
  1.18  report on the status of this project by January 18, 2000, to the 
  1.19  house and senate committees with jurisdiction over family and 
  1.20  early childhood education.
