  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to community education; directing rule 
  1.3             amendments; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 
  1.4             121.88, subdivision 1. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 121.88, 
  1.7   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [AUTHORIZATION.] Each school board may 
  1.9   initiate a community education program in its district and 
  1.10  provide for the general supervision of the program.  Each board 
  1.11  may, as it considers appropriate, employ community education 
  1.12  directors and coordinators to further the purposes of the 
  1.13  community education program.  A board of a school district with 
  1.14  less than 1,000 pupils is not required to hire a director of 
  1.15  community education, for any purpose. 
  1.16     Sec. 2.  [RULES.] 
  1.17     The board of education shall amend its rules to exempt 
  1.18  districts of less than 1,000 pupils from the requirement to hire 
  1.19  a community education director.
