  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; assisting school districts in 
  1.3             complying with state and federal laws prohibiting 
  1.4             discrimination; appropriating money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.7      $300,000 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.8   department of children, families, and learning in fiscal year 
  1.9   1998 to continue department efforts to ensure compliance with 
  1.10  state and federal laws prohibiting discrimination because of 
  1.11  race, religion, or sex.  The department shall use the 
  1.12  appropriation to provide state-level leadership on equal 
  1.13  education opportunities which promote elimination of 
  1.14  discriminatory practices in the areas of race, religion, and sex 
  1.15  in public schools and public educational agencies under its 
  1.16  general supervision and on activities including, at least, 
  1.17  compliance monitoring and voluntary compliance when local school 
  1.18  district deficiencies are found.
