  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to firearms; providing that persons with 
  1.3             permits are not allowed to carry a firearm in 
  1.4             government buildings; proposing coding for new law in 
  1.5             Minnesota Statutes, chapter 624.  
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [624.7144] [PERMITS TO CARRY PISTOLS; 
  1.8   OFF-LIMITS IN GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS.] 
  1.9      (a) A person authorized to carry a pistol under section 
  1.10  624.714 is nevertheless not permitted to carry or possess a 
  1.11  firearm in a government building.  
  1.12     (b) A person who violates paragraph (a) is guilty of a 
  1.13  gross misdemeanor.  
  1.14     (c) This section does not apply to: 
  1.15     (1) an on-duty security guard; 
  1.16     (2) a person while in a parking lot or parking ramp; or 
  1.17     (3) a person engaged in training or a course related to 
  1.18  firearm safety or operation. 
  1.19     (d) As used in this section, "government building" means a 
  1.20  building or structure owned or leased by the state, a city, 
  1.21  county, school district, township, unit of regional government, 
  1.22  sanitary district, or other political subdivision of this state.
  1.23     [EFFECTIVE DATE.] This section is effective May 28, 2003, 
  1.24  and applies to crimes committed on or after that date.
