  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to state government; creating a task force to 
  1.3             study certain works of art in the capitol. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1. [CITATION.] 
  1.6      This act may be known as the "Pride in Public Art Act of 
  1.7   2001." 
  1.8      Sec. 2. [TASK FORCE.] 
  1.9      (a) The capitol area architectural and planning board and 
  1.10  the director of the Minnesota Historical Society, in 
  1.11  consultation with state minority councils, shall jointly appoint 
  1.12  a task force to study paintings, other than portraits of 
  1.13  governors, hung in public areas of the state capitol.  The first 
  1.14  priority for the study must be the paintings in the governor's 
  1.15  reception rooms.  The task force must include historians; 
  1.16  persons with expertise in the type of paintings displayed in the 
  1.17  capitol; persons representing the perspective of Native 
  1.18  Americans, African-Americans, Latino-Americans, Asian-Americans, 
  1.19  and other communities that are of minority status in Minnesota; 
  1.20  women; and public members.  Members of the task force shall be 
  1.21  reimbursed for expenses as provided in section 15.059, 
  1.22  subdivision 6. 
  1.23     (b) The task force shall evaluate the historical accuracy 
  1.24  of the paintings described in this section, and the 
  2.1   appropriateness of the depiction of people and events, in a 
  2.2   broader historical context.  If any paintings are found to be 
  2.3   historically inaccurate or otherwise inappropriate, the task 
  2.4   force shall make recommendations for possible methods of 
  2.5   correcting or ameliorating these concerns. 
  2.6      (c) The task force shall report its recommendations to the 
  2.7   capitol area architectural and planning board, the Minnesota 
  2.8   Historical Society, and the legislature by January 15, 2002.  
  2.9   The task force expires June 30, 2002. 
  2.10     Sec. 3. [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.11     Sections 1 and 2 are effective the day following final 
  2.12  enactment.
