  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to smoking; requiring a landlord to prevent 
  1.3             smoke from a residential rental unit from entering the 
  1.4             rental apartment building's common areas; amending 
  1.5             Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 144.416. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 144.416, is 
  1.8   amended to read: 
  1.9      144.416 [RESPONSIBILITIES OF PROPRIETORS.] 
  1.10     The proprietor or other person in charge of a public place 
  1.11  shall make reasonable efforts to prevent smoking or smoke in the 
  1.12  public place by 
  1.13     (a) posting appropriate signs; 
  1.14     (b) arranging seating to provide a smoke-free area; 
  1.15     (c) asking smokers to refrain from smoking upon request of 
  1.16  a client or employee suffering discomfort from the smoke; or 
  1.17     (d) providing air purifiers to units in a rental apartment 
  1.18  building in which there is smoking, or otherwise ensuring that 
  1.19  smoke from a unit will not enter the common areas of the 
  1.20  building; or 
  1.21     (e) any other means which may be appropriate.
