  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; requiring the 
  1.3             commissioner of corrections to study the effects of 
  1.4             telecommuting on juvenile crime and other social 
  1.5             issues; appropriating money. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [STUDY ON EFFECTS OF TELECOMMUTING.] 
  1.8      The commissioner of corrections shall study the effects of 
  1.9   telecommuting on juvenile crime and other social issues.  The 
  1.10  commissioner shall present a written report to the legislature 
  1.11  no later than January 15, 2002, in compliance with Minnesota 
  1.12  Statutes, sections 3.195 and 3.197.  For purposes of this 
  1.13  section, "telecommuting" means a work arrangement in which an 
  1.14  employee is allowed to perform the normal duties and 
  1.15  responsibilities of the employee's position, through the use of 
  1.16  computers or telecommunications, at home or another place apart 
  1.17  from the employee's usual place of work. 
  1.18     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.19     $....... is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.20  commissioner of corrections for the fiscal year ending June 30, 
  1.21  2002, for the telecommuting study required under section 1.
