  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to local government; appropriating money for 
  1.3             emergency snow removal. 
  1.4   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.5      Section 1.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.6      Subdivision 1.  [FOR SNOW REMOVAL.] $25,000,000 in fiscal 
  1.7   year 1997 is appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.8   department of transportation for distribution for emergency snow 
  1.9   removal to local units of government that have exceeded their 
  1.10  budgets for snow removal.  The department shall devise a formula 
  1.11  or criteria for distribution of funds based on: 
  1.12     (1) total mileage of roads under the jurisdiction of the 
  1.13  local unit of government; 
  1.14     (2) population of local units of government; and 
  1.15     (3) amount of snowfall at the official weather station in, 
  1.16  or nearest to, the local government unit. 
  1.17     Subd. 2.  [REQUEST; NECESSARY INFORMATION.] To receive 
  1.18  financial aid, a local unit of government must request the aid 
  1.19  and provide relevant information. 
  1.20     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.21     Section 1 is effective the day after its final enactment.
