  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to licensing; electricians; eligibility 
  1.3             requirement for applicant for master electrician 
  1.4             licensure; amending Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 
  1.5             326.242, subdivision 1. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 326.242, 
  1.8   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subdivision 1.  [MASTER ELECTRICIAN.] Except as otherwise 
  1.10  provided by law, no person shall install, alter, repair, plan, 
  1.11  lay out, or supervise the installing, altering, or repairing of 
  1.12  electrical wiring, apparatus, or equipment for light, heat, 
  1.13  power, or other purposes unless the person is:  (a) licensed by 
  1.14  the board as a master electrician and (b)(i) the electrical work 
  1.15  is for a licensed electrical contractor and the person is an 
  1.16  employee, partner, or officer of, or is the licensed electrical 
  1.17  contractor, or (ii) the electrical work is performed for the 
  1.18  person's employer on electric wiring, apparatus, equipment, or 
  1.19  facilities owned or leased by the employer which is located 
  1.20  within the limits of property which is owned or leased and 
  1.21  operated and maintained by the employer.  
  1.22     (1) An applicant for a Class A master electrician's license 
  1.23  shall (a) be a graduate of a four-year electrical course in an 
  1.24  accredited college or university; or (b) shall have had at least 
  1.25  one year's experience, acceptable to the board, as a licensed 
  2.1   journeyman; or (c) shall have had at least five years' 
  2.2   experience, acceptable to the board, in planning for, laying 
  2.3   out, supervising and installing wiring, apparatus, or equipment 
  2.4   for electrical light, heat, and power; or (d) shall have had at 
  2.5   least ten years of supervised or unsupervised experience in 
  2.6   planning for, laying out, supervising, and installing wiring, 
  2.7   apparatus, or equipment for electrical light, heat, and power, 
  2.8   and shall hold an adult vocational education license issued by 
  2.9   the state board of technical colleges.  
  2.10     (2) As of August 1, 1985, no new Class B master 
  2.11  electrician's licenses shall be issued.  An individual who has a 
  2.12  Class B master electrician's license as of August 1, 1985 may 
  2.13  retain the license and exercise the privileges it grants, which 
  2.14  include electrical work limited to single phase systems, not 
  2.15  over 200 amperes in capacity, on farmsteads or single-family 
  2.16  dwellings located in towns or municipalities with fewer than 
  2.17  2,500 inhabitants. 
  2.18     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.19     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
