  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to human services; expanding eligibility for 
  1.3             the prescription drug program; amending Minnesota 
  1.4             Statutes 2000, section 256.955, by adding a 
  1.5             subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 256.955, is 
  1.8   amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 2c.  [EXPANDED ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA.] (a) Within the 
  1.10  limits of available appropriations and funding, the commissioner 
  1.11  shall expand the program eligibility in the following order: 
  1.12     (1) asset limits shall be increased to $15,000 for a single 
  1.13  person and $30,000 for a married couple; 
  1.14     (2) income limits shall not exceed 175 percent of the 
  1.15  federal poverty guidelines; and 
  1.16     (3) a person who is disabled as defined in section 256D.35, 
  1.17  subdivision 8a, shall be eligible for coverage under the 
  1.18  prescription drug program. 
  1.19     (b) This subdivision sunsets if the federal government 
  1.20  designs and implements a senior drug program or provides 
  1.21  prescription Medicare coverage. 
  1.22     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.23     Section 1 is effective July 1, 2002.
