  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to agriculture; authorizing the use of freeze 
  1.3             branding for livestock identification; amending 
  1.4             Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 35.821, subdivision 
  1.5             3, and by adding a subdivision. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 35.821, 
  1.8   subdivision 3, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 3.  [BRAND.] "Brand" means a permanent identification 
  1.10  mark, of which the letters, numbers, and figures used are each 
  1.11  four inches or more in length or diameter and applied using the 
  1.12  technique of freeze branding or burned into the hide of a live 
  1.13  animal with a hot iron, which is to be considered in relation to 
  1.14  its location on the animal.  The term relates to both the mark 
  1.15  burned into the hide and its location.  In the case of sheep, 
  1.16  the term includes, but is not limited to, a painted mark which 
  1.17  is renewed after each shearing. 
  1.18     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 35.821, is 
  1.19  amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.20     Subd. 3a.  [FREEZE BRANDING.] "Freeze branding" means the 
  1.21  application of an intensely cold iron to the hide of a live 
  1.22  animal. 
  1.23     Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.24     Sections 1 and 2 are effective the day following final 
  1.25  enactment.
