  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to civil actions; prohibiting arrangements 
  1.3             that would make payment of compensation for witnesses 
  1.4             testifying in civil actions contingent upon the 
  1.5             outcome of the action; proposing coding for new law in 
  1.6             Minnesota Statutes, chapter 357. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [357.42] [EXPENSES OF NONPARTIES; CIVIL 
  1.9   ACTIONS; REASONABLE COMPENSATION; CONTINGENT FEE PROHIBITED.] 
  1.10     When in a civil action an arrangement for reasonable 
  1.11  compensation for a witness to give testimony has been made under 
  1.12  rule 45.06 of the Rules of Civil Procedure prior to the time of 
  1.13  taking the testimony, the fee arranged must be paid regardless 
  1.14  of the outcome of the civil action.  A party may not arrange for 
  1.15  payment of compensation under rule 45.06 of the Rules of Civil 
  1.16  Procedure contingent upon the outcome of the civil action.
