  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to employment; modifying the definition of 
  1.3             wage; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 
  1.4             177.23, subdivision 4. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 177.23, 
  1.7   subdivision 4, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subd. 4.  [WAGE.] "Wage" means compensation due to an 
  1.9   employee by reason of employment, payable in legal tender of the 
  1.10  United States, check on banks convertible into cash on demand at 
  1.11  full face value or, except for instances of written objection to 
  1.12  the employer by the employee, direct deposit to the employee's 
  1.13  choice of demand deposit account, subject to allowances 
  1.14  permitted by rules of the department under section 177.28.
