  1.1                          A bill for an act
  1.2             relating to education; providing funding for advanced 
  1.3             placement and international baccalaureate programs; 
  1.4             appropriating money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [ADVANCED PLACEMENT AND INTERNATIONAL 
  1.7   BACCALAUREATE PROGRAMS.] 
  1.8      $1,000,000 in fiscal year 1996 and $1,000,000 in fiscal 
  1.9   year 1997 are appropriated from the general fund to the 
  1.10  department of education for the state advanced placement and 
  1.11  international baccalaureate programs, including training 
  1.12  programs, support programs, and examination fee subsidies. 
  1.13     $550,000 each year is for examination fee subsidies.  
  1.14  Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, section 126.239, subdivision 
  1.15  3, in fiscal year 1995, the commissioner shall pay the fee for 
  1.16  one advanced placement or international baccalaureate 
  1.17  examination for the first examination each student takes.  The 
  1.18  commissioner shall pay 50 percent of the fee for each additional 
  1.19  examination a student takes or more than 50 percent if the 
  1.20  student meets the low-income guidelines established by the 
  1.21  commissioner.  If this amount is not adequate, the commissioner 
  1.22  may pay less than 50 percent for the additional examinations. 
  1.23     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.24     Section 1 is effective July 1, 1995.
