  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to crime prevention; requiring the department 
  1.3             of corrections to reimburse counties for the costs 
  1.4             incurred by counties in apprehending and confining 
  1.5             certain individuals under the department's 
  1.6             supervision; amending Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 
  1.7             241.271; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota 
  1.8             Statutes, chapter 241. 
  1.9   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.10     Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1996, section 241.271, is 
  1.11  amended to read: 
  1.12     241.271 [REIMBURSEMENT OF COUNTIES AND MUNICIPALITIES; 
  1.13  BUDGET REQUEST.] 
  1.14     The department of corrections shall must include in its 
  1.15  budget requests such amounts as may be claimed by any county or 
  1.16  municipality necessary to reimburse said the county or 
  1.17  municipality for expenses of a county attorney or sheriff or 
  1.18  municipal police department resulting from activities involving 
  1.19  inmates of state correctional institutions located in its county 
  1.20  or municipality.  In addition, the department must request an 
  1.21  amount sufficient to reimburse counties under section 241.273. 
  1.22     Sec. 2.  [241.273] [REQUIRED REIMBURSEMENTS TO COUNTIES.] 
  1.23     The department of corrections must reimburse counties for 
  1.24  the costs incurred by counties in apprehending and confining 
  1.25  individuals who are under the department's supervision following 
  1.26  release from a correctional facility as defined in section 
  1.27  244.01, subdivision 4, and where the department has issued a 
  2.1   warrant directing that the individual be taken into custody. 
  2.2      Sec. 3.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  2.3      $....... is appropriated to the commissioner of corrections 
  2.4   from the general fund for the fiscal biennium ending June 30, 
  2.5   1999, to make the reimbursements required in section 2.
