  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to insurance; clarifying that insurance 
  1.3             coverage for special dietary treatment for 
  1.4             phenylketonuria includes protein modified food 
  1.5             products; amending Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 
  1.6             62A.26, subdivision 2. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 1994, section 62A.26, 
  1.9   subdivision 2, is amended to read: 
  1.10     Subd. 2.  [REQUIRED COVERAGE.] Every policy, plan, 
  1.11  certificate, or contract referred to in subdivision 1 issued or 
  1.12  renewed after August 1, 1985, must provide coverage for special 
  1.13  dietary treatment for phenylketonuria, including protein 
  1.14  modified food products, when recommended by a physician.  For 
  1.15  purposes of this section, "protein modified food products" means 
  1.16  food specially formulated to reduce the protein content to under 
  1.17  one gram of protein per serving and does not include foods 
  1.18  naturally low in protein. 
  1.19     Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  1.20     Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
