  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to education; providing for a report on the 
  1.3             number of instructional days in a school year; 
  1.4             appropriating money. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  [MINIMUM NUMBER OF DAYS OF INSTRUCTION IN A 
  1.7   SCHOOL YEAR; REPORT.] 
  1.8      The commissioner of children, families, and learning, in 
  1.9   consultation with the school districts, shall consider the 
  1.10  minimum number of days of instruction in a school year necessary 
  1.11  to ensure student academic achievement.  The commissioner shall 
  1.12  submit a report on its findings and recommendations to the 
  1.13  chairs of the education committees of the legislature by 
  1.14  February 15, 2000. 
  1.15     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.16     $....... is appropriated in fiscal year 2000 from the 
  1.17  general fund to the commissioner of children, families, and 
  1.18  learning to reimburse school districts for costs associated with 
  1.19  the addition of three days of instruction under Minnesota 
  1.20  Statutes, section 120A.41, to the 1998-1999 school year.  
  1.21  Districts must apply to the commissioner of children, families, 
  1.22  and learning for reimbursement.
