  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to traffic regulations; requiring a motorist 
  1.3             approaching a stopped emergency vehicle to move to the 
  1.4             lane of multilane highways that is farthest from the 
  1.5             emergency vehicle; amending Minnesota Statutes 2000, 
  1.6             section 169.18, subdivision 1, by adding a subdivision.
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 169.18, 
  1.9   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.10     Subdivision 1.  [KEEP TO THE RIGHT.] Upon all roadways of 
  1.11  sufficient width a vehicle shall be driven upon the right half 
  1.12  of the roadway, except as follows: 
  1.13     (1) when overtaking and passing another vehicle proceeding 
  1.14  in the same direction under the rules governing such movement; 
  1.15     (2) when the right half of a roadway is closed to traffic 
  1.16  while under construction or repair; 
  1.17     (3) upon a roadway divided into three marked lanes for 
  1.18  traffic under the rules applicable thereon; or 
  1.19     (4) upon a roadway designated and signposted for one-way 
  1.20  traffic as a one-way roadway; or 
  1.21     (5) as necessary to comply with subdivision 11 when 
  1.22  approaching an authorized emergency vehicle parked or stopped on 
  1.23  the roadway. 
  1.24     Sec. 2.  Minnesota Statutes 2000, section 169.18, is 
  1.25  amended by adding a subdivision to read: 
  1.26     Subd. 11.  [PASSING PARKED EMERGENCY VEHICLE.] When 
  2.1   approaching and before passing an authorized emergency vehicle 
  2.2   that is parked or otherwise stopped on or next to a street or 
  2.3   highway having two lanes in the same direction, the driver of a 
  2.4   vehicle shall safely move the vehicle to the lane farthest from 
  2.5   the emergency vehicle. 
  2.6      Sec. 3.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.7      Sections 1 and 2 are effective June 1, 2002.
