  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to agriculture; designating agroforestry as 
  1.3             an agricultural pursuit; appropriating money for 
  1.4             hybrid tree management research; proposing coding for 
  1.5             new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 17. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [17.40] [AGROFORESTRY.] 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [DEFINITION.] "Agroforestry" means the 
  1.9   cultivation of short-rotation woody crops using agricultural 
  1.10  practices to produce timber or forest products. 
  1.11     Subd. 2.  [AGRICULTURAL PURSUIT.] Agroforestry is an 
  1.12  agricultural pursuit. 
  1.13     Sec. 2.  [APPROPRIATION.] 
  1.14     $200,000 is appropriated in fiscal year 1998 and $200,000 
  1.15  is appropriated in fiscal year 1999 from the general fund to the 
  1.16  board of directors of the agricultural utilization research 
  1.17  institute for hybrid tree management research and development of 
  1.18  an implementation plan for establishing hybrid tree plantations 
  1.19  in the state.  This appropriation is available to the extent 
  1.20  matched by $2 of nonstate contributions, either cash or in kind, 
  1.21  for each $1 of state money.
