  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to retirement; teachers retirement 
  1.3             association; authorizing purchase of service credit 
  1.4             for a period of military service during the Vietnam 
  1.5             war preceding the beginning of teaching service and 
  1.6             membership in the association. 
  1.7   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.8      Section 1.  [TEACHERS; MILITARY SERVICE CREDIT PURCHASE.] 
  1.9      Notwithstanding Minnesota Statutes, section 354.53, a 
  1.10  member of the teachers retirement association may purchase 
  1.11  service credit in the association for a period of military 
  1.12  service preceding the member's initial employment as a teacher 
  1.13  if the member provides proof to the association that, before 
  1.14  entering military service, the member was enrolled in a college 
  1.15  education program and whose college education was interrupted 
  1.16  due to military service during the Vietnam war and had 
  1.17  reenrolled in a teacher preparation program as defined in 
  1.18  Minnesota Statutes, section 354.05, subdivision 2, within a year 
  1.19  of the end of military service.  The member may obtain credit 
  1.20  under this section for the period of military service, but not 
  1.21  for any voluntary extension of military service beyond the 
  1.22  initial period of enlistment, induction, or call to active 
  1.23  duty.  The amount and payment of contributions are governed by 
  1.24  Minnesota Statutes, section 354.53.  The member's current 
  1.25  employer shall pay the employer contribution and additional 
  1.26  contribution required by Minnesota Statutes, section 353.42.  A 
  2.1   purchase of service credit and payment of contributions under 
  2.2   this section must be completed by January 1, 1996.
