  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to elections; correcting an error in the 
  1.3             transition schedule for the election of school board 
  1.4             members in even-year elections; amending Laws 1994, 
  1.5             chapter 646, section 26, subdivision 3. 
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  Laws 1994, chapter 646, section 26, subdivision 
  1.8   3, is amended to read: 
  1.9      Subd. 3.  [SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS.] The terms of all school 
  1.10  board members elected in 1996 expire on the first Monday in 
  1.11  January of 2001.  The terms of all school board members elected 
  1.12  in 1998 expire on the first Monday in January of 2003. 
  1.13     The terms of office of school board members elected in 1995 
  1.14  expire on the first Monday in January of 1999 or 2001, as 
  1.15  provided in this paragraph.  The governing body of the school 
  1.16  district shall select by lot the board members whose terms will 
  1.17  expire in January of 1999 or January of 2001.  To the extent 
  1.18  practicable, one-half of the members elected in 1995 must expire 
  1.19  in January of 1999.  The governing body of the school district 
  1.20  must complete the selection required by this paragraph no later 
  1.21  than 30 days before the first day to file affidavits of 
  1.22  candidacy for the election in 1995. 
  1.23     The terms of office of school board members elected in 1997 
  1.24  expire on the first Monday in January of 2001 or 2003, as 
  1.25  provided in this paragraph.  No later than 30 days before the 
  2.1   first day to file affidavits of candidacy for the election in 
  2.2   1997, the governing body of the school district shall select by 
  2.3   lot the board members whose terms will expire in January of 2001 
  2.4   or January of 2003.  To the extent practicable, one-half of the 
  2.5   members elected in 1997 must expire in January of 2001.  
  2.6      Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
  2.7      This act is effective the day following final enactment.
