  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to highways; providing for the use of 
  1.3             corn-based de-icing solutions for snow and ice control 
  1.4             on state trunk highways; proposing coding for new law 
  1.5             in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 161.  
  1.6   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.7      Section 1.  [161.168] [SNOW AND ICE CONTROL MATERIALS.] 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [FINDING.] The legislature finds that the 
  1.9   use on Minnesota highways of de-icing solutions derived from 
  1.10  corn provides economic and environmental benefits to the state 
  1.11  while preserving public safety. 
  1.12     Subd. 2.  [USE OF CORN-DERIVED DE-ICING SOLUTION.] The 
  1.13  commissioner of transportation shall use a corn-derived de-icing 
  1.14  solution for snow and ice control on trunk highways to the 
  1.15  extent that the commissioner determines is economically 
  1.16  feasible, environmentally beneficial, and consistent with public 
  1.17  safety. 
  1.18     Subd. 3.  [EFFECT ON ENVIRONMENT.] The commissioner, in 
  1.19  determining which snow and ice control materials to use on trunk 
  1.20  highways, shall consider the effect of each type of material on 
  1.21  the environment and on the deterioration of bridges and other 
  1.22  structures.
