A bill for an act
relating to education; providing for a kindergarten through grade 5 after-school,
culturally focused arts program to improve the reading, math, and life skills of
underperforming students and thereby reduce the academic achievement gap;
appropriating money.
BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:
(a) $120,000 in fiscal year 2017 is appropriated from the general fund to the
commissioner of education for a grant to Independent School District No. 625, St. Paul,
for an after-school, culturally focused arts program to improve the reading, math, and life
skills of 75 to 100 underperforming students in kindergarten through grade 5 by engaging
and immersing them in their art, history, and culture and providing them with math, literacy,
and life skills coaching, all in an effort to reduce the district's academic achievement gap.
(b) The base for this program in fiscal year 2018 and later is $120,000.
This section is effective July 1, 2016.
