  1.1                          A bill for an act 
  1.2             relating to elections; requiring primaries in certain 
  1.3             school district elections; amending Minnesota Statutes 
  1.4             2002, section 205A.03, subdivision 1. 
  1.5   BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
  1.6      Section 1.  Minnesota Statutes 2002, section 205A.03, 
  1.7   subdivision 1, is amended to read: 
  1.8      Subdivision 1.  [RESOLUTION; REQUIRED PRIMARIES.] (a) The 
  1.9   school board of a school district may, by resolution adopted by 
  1.10  June 1 of any year, decide to choose nominees for school 
  1.11  district elective offices by a primary as provided in 
  1.12  subdivisions 1 to 6.  The resolution, when adopted, is effective 
  1.13  for all ensuing elections of board members in that school 
  1.14  district until it is revoked.  
  1.15     (b) In a school district election, if there are more than 
  1.16  two candidates for a specified school board position or more 
  1.17  than twice as many school board candidates as there are at-large 
  1.18  school board positions available, a school district must hold a 
  1.19  primary whether or not it has adopted a resolution under this 
  1.20  subdivision.
