An act

relating to public safety; requiring crime alerts to be distributed in a format that disabled citizens can access;

amending Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 13.871, by adding a subdivision; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 611A.

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA:

Section 1.

Minnesota Statutes 2008, section 13.871, is amended by adding a subdivision to read:

new text begin Data regarding contact information provided by a citizen requesting a crime alert are classified under section 611A.0393. new text end

Sec. 2.

new text begin [611A.0393] CRIME ALERTS; VIOLENT CRIMES; DISABLED ACCESS. new text end

new text begin If a law enforcement agency provides a crime alert to citizens within its jurisdiction, the alerts and any accompanying documents must be in a form that a disabled person can access with commercially available text-based screen reader software. Any contact information provided by a citizen requesting a crime alert is private data on individuals as defined in section 13.02. new text end
