                              CHAPTER 19-S.F.No. 9 
                  An act relating to local government; authorizing cities to 
                  provide housing assistance to secure fire and 
                  ambulance service; proposing coding for new law in 
                  Minnesota Statutes, chapter 412. 
        BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF MINNESOTA: 
           Section 1.  [412.153] [EXPENDITURES FOR PUBLIC SAFETY 
        PERSONNEL HOUSING ASSISTANCE.] 
           Statutory cities may expend public funds to acquire or 
        lease residential property for housing or otherwise provide 
        housing assistance in the city for one or more volunteer 
        firefighters or ambulance personnel.  The expenditure may only 
        be made to attract and retain the qualified personnel necessary 
        to ensure that a city has timely public safety and related 
        service.  A city may make the expenditure only after the need 
        for the expenditure has been established and approved at a 
        public hearing.  
           Sec. 2.  [EFFECTIVE DATE.] 
           Section 1 is effective the day following final enactment.
